One Year Uncommon Life Challenge

Tony Dungy's devotional, "The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge" is the perfect devotional for the special man in your life. Dungy's devotional is all about being uncommon - not going with the flow in a world led by secularism, but rising above the common man in a life that means more. This devotional is a 365 day devotional, and is an easy way for a busy businessman/dad/husband to fit a daily devotional into his busy life. The format of the devotionals are perfect - each day offers a scripture, short (usually around half of a page) devotion about that scripture, and an "uncommon key", where the message is summed up. Overall, each devotional is only one page long, but packs some very profound messages. Dungy touches on issues such as drinking alcohol, family relationships, and how to impact the world in a positive way. Wonderfully written, and a great tool for any man. The only think about it I wasn't crazy about was the the devotional goes by days, so the book starts with January 1. Obviously not everyone will buy this book before January 1st to start it in the new year. I give this book a 4.5/5. Great job, Tony!

Proverbs Reconstructed

"Proverbs Reconstructed" is an awesome reference book for the book of Proverbs. What Gus Dallas has done in this book is categorically list the various topics referenced in the book of Proverbs by subject matter. The topics that are covered range from anger, confidence, death, friendship, and prophecy, to name a few. This book will make an awesome reference for me, personally, when I am searching for Biblical reference to certain topics, it makes it super easy to find Biblical guidance on any topic. All of the verses come from the book of Proverbs, and are listed with their subject matter, and the chapter and verse are listed, so you can easily cross reference with your Bible. I absolutely love this, and will be using it quite often! Dallas did a wonderful job of breaking down the book of Proverbs and categorizing it well! Love it!

Smitten

"Smitten" is a romantic story of the transformation of a logging mill town that has to recreate itself when the mill closes down. Four friends come up with the idea to take advantage of the name of the town, and create a honeymoon getaway. The story is well written, and very enjoyable. I really loved the story itself, and literally didn't want to put the book down! This is a great romance novel for anyone, as it has a great storyline. The personal conflicts and characters' backstories are very realistic and believable, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic novels. A wonderful read!!

Fierce Beauty

"Fierce Beauty" by Kim Meeder is an interesting compilation of Kim's personal stories and how she learned to lean on God through her own struggles. This book is actually a very interesting read, and I enjoyed the book. Usually I am not such a huge fan of books that are solely about someone's own personal struggles, but Kim focuses on a lot of issues that women in our times face, such as weight and beauty. I appreciated that Kim was honest about her own struggles, and her own realizations give hope for others who have been or are in similar situations. There is so much pressure on women in our society to be "beautiful" and most women will try to meet those standards at any cost. This book addresses that false "beauty", and tells Kim's amazing story. I really enjoyed this book and think it would be a great gift for a young woman. I'd give it 5/5!

Little Red Book of Wisdom

"Little Red Book of Wisdom" by Mark DeMoss is a book all about practical wisdoms and stories of the application of those wisdoms in everyday life. While the premise of the book is interesting, I found it to be really a tedious read. The book does offer up tidbits of wisdom about such topics as integrity, technology, honesty, and integrity. The chapters are very long, so it's hard to actually get through them if you are a busy mom, like I am. I found it hard to actually enjoy the reading, and even harder to remember what I had read when I sat down to continue the book. Mostly, it is just a compilation of stories about people that DeMoss picked who exemplify the general wisdoms that he offers up.

December 1941

"December 1941" by Craig Shirley is an absolutely fascinating book. I have always been interested in history, and have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this particular book. The book is broken up into chapters, with each chapter retelling the story of one day of the month. What I found to be fascinating is the way that the book not only tells the stories of what is happening in the war, and overseas, but it tells so much of what the mindset of the American people at home was. Nearly every book I've ever picked up about World War II focuses mainly on the events overseas, with regard to battle. This is one of very few books that truly delves into the atmosphere and happenings of the people who were left here to hold down the fort while husbands, fathers, and sons went to war.

I loved this book, and how uniquely it is written. I found it fascinating how the atmosphere of Americans shifted so drastically from the start of December, 1941 through the end of that same month. I would highly recommend this book to anyone shopping for a gift for a history lover - it's truly a one of a kind read. Highly interesting.

His Mighty Warrior

"His Mighty Warrior" by Sheri Rose Shepherd is a super cute book for boys. This book is almost like a devotional for young boys, in that each "devotional" is two pages - on the first page, there is a short letter to the reader from God, as well as a Bible verse that correlates to the letter. On the second page, there is  short prayer for the boy that also ties into the message of the letter from God. This book covers ares such as life, death, family, and money, and does so in a way that is encouraging to the child.

The theme of the book is very boy-ish, with pirates gracing the front cover, and that theme follows through the illustrations of the entire book. I think this would be a great book for any young boy - it's easy to read with simple language and very easy to follow and understand. I would highly recommend this book - it would make a wonderful stocking stuffer for a son or grandson at Christmas!

Three Cups

"Three Cups" is a children's book by Tony Townsley and Mark St. Germain. This book tells the story of a little boy who receives a gift of three cups for his birthday. The cups are meant to help the boy with saving, spending, and giving. The book walks through each of the three cups, explaining how each cup had a purpose, and how each could be used. I think that this would be a great book to help a young child get started with saving and giving a portion of their allowance or other money they receive. The illustrations are simple, and the actual text of the book is easy to understand, and is ideal for young children.

I was really interested in the concept of the "three cups", and will definitely be implementing this idea in my own home when my daughter gets a little bit older. I think that the idea of having three cups, each one with a purpose helps a young child understand the concept of saving and putting money away to help others, as well as allowing them a budget for spending their money on things they want to save for. This system is much easier for children to understand than just putting money in the bank, and not actually seeing how their money is growing.

This book also comes with a short, helpful guide for parents on the last page of the book, which gives some good tips on how to introduce and follow through on this system. I would recommend this book for anyone with young children who you want to start understanding the concept of putting money away for saving and for helping others.

Lucado Inspirational Reader

"The Lucado Inspirational Reader: Hope and Encouragement for Your Everyday Life" is a compilation of Max Lucado's most popular and inspirational words of wisdom from his writings. The book itself is pretty long - nearly 500 pages. The book is broken up into 11 chapters, and the quotes and stories are categorized by subject among those 11 chapters, so it is relatively easy to find inspiration on a particular subject or topic. There is a wide variety of stories and quotes in this book, ranging from one sentence quotes to 1 or 2 page stories.

Max Lucado has been such a big name is Christian writing, and although I don't have every one of his books, I have to admit that this is nearly as good! It has some of Lucado's most inspirational, encouraging words to help us live in hope and faith in our everyday lives. I really like this, and think it is a great resource when you are looking for a little bit of encouragement from day to day. It's easy to pick it up, find the subject you're searching for, and find hope within the pages.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who could use a little reassurance or encouragement in their daily life - loved this book!

40 Ways To Get Closer to God

"40 Ways to Get Closer to God" by Jerry MacGregor is essentially a devotional. There are, obviously, 40 days worth of devotional material, each focusing on a specific way to connect with God. Each day starts with a quote, and is followed by a short devotional, usually suggesting one specific way to further your walk with God. After the devotional, there is the "challenge", which gives you one thing to try to bring you closer to God. There is also a bible verse, as well as a place for your own notes.

MacGregor uses his own personal experience as well as the experiences of others to form these necessary components of a close walk with God. He discusses fasting, friendships, and age, among other topics in this devotional. I liked the challenges - although I didn't like doing a few of them (such as fasting), I think that MacGregor has a strong basis for adding each challenge to this book. I also think that this book helps make you aware that a relationship with God has to be a two way street - not just asking him for help when things go wrong, but praising and connecting with him on a daily basis by making a conscious effort to do so.

Overall, a great read. I give it 4/5!

Torn

"Torn" by Jud Wilhite is a book about learning to have faith in God, even when it feels like He is failing you. Personally, I can relate to the topic of this book - after all, who among us hasn't felt disappointment and despair? Wilhite uses biblical references, as well as personal experiences to show us how, even in our darkest moments, God will never desert us. I think that this book is reassuring, but unless you have actually been through the dark times, and come out on the other side, it is hard to really relate. Most of us are reading this book in the midst of turmoil, and while it is reassuring, and a reminder that God is still here, it's hard to really relate to the book. I liked it, and thought it was very well written. But, it isn't full of the answers to why God lets us suffer or endure pain. So, if that is what you are seeking, keep looking. I would give this a 3/5.

A Year With Jesus

"A Year With Jesus" is a 365 day devotional reading by R.P. Nettelhorst. This devotional is unique to others that I have read and reviewed in that each devotional is centered around Jesus' words in the Bible. I liked that the verses for each devotional were quotes from Jesus, and it almost gives the sense that Jesus is talking to you, which helps to feel like you are actually in a time of communication with Jesus, rather than just reading. The devotionals themselves are relatively short - each one is only one page long. The devotional starts out with the quote from the Scripture, and is followed by a brief explanation or analysis of the verses. The explanation is easy to understand, and really ties in well with the verses, and are relevant to everday living. This is a great devotional for a busy on the go mom or businessman, because it only requires a small amount of time to read every day. I really enjoyed this devotional, and would highly recommend it. 5/5!

The Book of Man

I am a big fan of William Bennett, and his writing. I think that "Book of Man" is a good book to give to a young man or even a grown man. I decided to read this just out of sheer curiousity, and love for Mr. Bennett's work. This book is a delightful compilation of stories of men of distinction from all walks of life throughout history - warriors, writers, philosophers, and leaders. Bennett selected the cream of the crop for this compilation, from the likes of Ronald Reagan to William the Conquerer. These stories cover a broad range of topics such as play and sports, war, work, prayer, and women. The book is broken up into sections for each topic, and within each topic is a broad range of stories and biographical profiles befitting of each subject. The stories are inspiration, uplifting, and motivating. The people that Bennett chooses to profile are all role models in one way or another for young men, and I think this book would make a great gift for an adolescent, or even high school or college graduate. It combines the great men throughout history, and challenges a young man to live up to a standard. I would give this book 5/5.

Nearing Home

Nearing Home is Billy Graham's latest book, and geared toward older adults. The book's main focus is aging, and remembering the purposefulness of your life remains. The book discusses practical subjects such as wills, retirement, and finances that are pertinent, as well as retelling stories from his past. The book does a good job in reminding people that as they age, it is important to remember that God still has a purpose for you, as once your purpose is fulfilled your life is over. I think this book would make a good gift for an elderly parent or grandparent, or even for middle aged people. I think Graham did a good job of putting together a book with stories and bible references to aging as well as incorporating some of the important aspects of aging and retiring. I would recommend this book to older adults, and would give it 4/5.

The God Pocket

"The God Pocket" is an interesting take on giving when prompted by the Spirit. I think it offers up some neat ideas, and really opens up our charitable giving to God's demand. The book proposes putting aside a certain amount of money, to be given to people when you feel the prodding of the Spirit. Putting the money aside ahead of time is a good idea, as it emotionally detaches us from thinking it's ours to spend. I think in the current economic times, it might be hard for people to be able to set extra money aside to do this, as most people are living paycheck to paycheck. But, I think that for those who can, they could really help bring someone closer to God through their finances. A small action, such as giving a struggling family a small amount of money, can show them that God cares, and is reaching out to them. I liked the whole premise of the book, and think that it was interesting. I would give this book a 3/5.

Heaven is for Real for Kids

I was really impressed by the e-book of "Heaven is for Real for Kids" by Colton Burpo. I was a little concerned about how the book would convey Colton's story without it being scary for a young child. Upon reading the e-book, though, they tastefully tell Colton's story and give wonderful details of his trip to Heaven in a way that can make a child look forward to seeing it themselves, and without scaring them. The e-book is beautifully illustrated with vivid pictures. The language is child-appropriate, and it tells the story simply. Each pages tells about something that Colton saw in Heaven, accompanied by a bible verse that correlates what he saw, reaffirming Colton's descriptions. It's really very interesting, and I would recommend it to anyone with a young child. Appropriate for children 3 and up, in my opinion.

"The Voice" New Testament

I was very excited to receive a copy of "The Voice" New Testament. This is a version of the New Testament, but it is written almost as if it is a play. Each person is identified, and their names preceed what they are saying. I really liked how it was written, because I find it much easier to follow, and makes it feel like you are reading a play, going action by action through the book. The text itself follows the New Testament, and you can look up verses just as you would in a traditional Bible, which I like. The wording is easy to understand, but yet it stays true to the traditional interpretation of the Bible. The first page of each chapter offers information or a backstory about that chapter or the person who wrote that chapter. Each chapter offers several short questions or information/thoughs relevant to what happened, and it really helps you connect with the biblical messages of that chapter. I really liked this version of the New Testament, and I would highly recommend it to those who have a hard time following a traditional Bible easily. Loved it!

Heroes & Villains of the Bible

I recently downloaded "Heroes & Villains of the Bible" in ebook format. I have a young daughter, and was interested to see if it would be something that I could read with her. Obviously, I would much rather she look up to heroes of the Bible than some of the "role models" that are out there today. I liked the book, but think that it would be better for an older age group than my daughter. I would suggest 7 or 8 years old and up. While the cover of the book suggests it is a "boy book", it actually follows more than just men of the Bible. I liked that they included some female characters, such as Ruth and Delilah. The book reads as a Bible, albeit the children's version, so it isn't like a traditional bible story book. Each chapter offers a thought or discussion to help your child connect with the reading. It also offers up a short moral of the reading. I liked that it helps the child get involved in the story. The readings are taken from a small percentage of the Bible, from the books of: Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 1 Kings, Esther, Daniel, Jonah, Luke, Matthew, John, Mark, and Acts. Not such a great read for smaller children, but definitely great for boys or girls who are a little bit older.

Just In Case You Ever Wonder

"Just In Case You Ever Wonder" by Max Lucado is an adorable children's book! As a parent, I think it is super important to let my child know that I am always there, no matter what life throws at them. Max Lucado puts that reassurance into words in this book - it is a super cute reminder to children that we love them, and will always be here for them, just in case they ever wonder. The book also touches on how much God loves them, and what a wonderful place Heaven is. I think that this book was well written, and Lucado was very aware of the audience he was writing for. The book does a great job of talking about Heaven without really getting into the topic of death, which can be really scary to a young child. I have a three year old, and think this book was written so it was easy for her to understand, and follow. I would recommend this book for children ages 2-7. The illustrations are cute, and simplistic. Great book for young children!

When God Whispers Your Name

"When God Whispers Your Name" by Max Lucado is a fantastic book. I was really looking forward to receiving this book because of Lucado's impressive reputation. I had never picked up any of his books before, so was really intrigued to finally read his work. "When God Whispers Your Name" is a fantastic book in which Lucado incorporates biblical truths into the everyday lives of people like you and I. Tying modern day people and stories to occurrences from biblical times like an absolute master, Lucado incorporates stories of the likes of Moses and Abraham and shows how those stories are still relevant today, and how God is still working through us today. Lucado inspires his audience like no other writer I've read from. "When God Whispers Your Name" makes you really feel like no matter what is going on in your life, it is for God's purpose. He draws fantastic parallels between famous biblical men and modern day man in an exceptional effort to show us that fundamentally, God hasn't changed, and that no matter what we are experiencing in our own lives, there is a purpose. Even when we don't understand the situation we are in, just as Moses probably didn't understand his own situation, in the end, there is a purpose and it is one that is of the Creator. I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone who might need a little encouragement (and really, who doesn't?)!

Bible Stories for Preschoolers

Bible Stories for Preschoolers is a super cute children's book of bible stories. I have a three year old daughter, and was really excited for this book to come so we could read it together. The stories aren't too long - a few pages per story, which makes it easy to read her a few before bed each night. I really appreciated that the stories use simple, easy to understand language, and the stories were all appropriate for young children. The illustrations in the book are vibrant and beautiful. Another nice feature of this book is the "Family Time" sections that appear occassionally throughout the book. There are three prompts, called "Talk", "Do", and "Remember". The "Talk" section offers up questions to ask your child about the stories they are reading. The "Do" section offers up an easy to do activity that is relevant to the story, as well. The "Remember" section offers a bible verse for the child to commit to memory. I really liked this part of the book, as it really helps you to discuss and get your child involved in the stories, and the bible verses are all short and easy to remember, and are easily understood by a young child. Overall I would give this book a 5/5. If there is a young child in your family, I would highly recommend buying this book - it would make for a great Christmas or birthday gift, as well. Loved it!

Living Close to God

When I received "Living Close to God (When You Aren't Good At It) by Gene Edwards, I was really intrigued by the topic of the book, after all, who doesn't desire to live close to God? The book tells a personal story of fitting God into a busy life, and how it worked for one person. I liked the personal story that this book tells, and it does point out some important scriptural references, and give some solid advice on building a stronger, more personal relationship with Christ. However, I felt that the book tells more of what worked for one person with a certain set of obstacles, and wasn't really applicable to every person who will pick up the book. There are many general references to scripture, which are great. I liked the story the book followed, but when I finished the book, didn't feel that I had gained any significant insight into living closer to God.

I would recommend this book if you are looking for a story about someone who has found a way to live close to God, and find an incredible connection with Christ. But if you are looking for inspiration to find a way for you to personally have that same relationship, I would take a pass on this book.

America: The Last Best Hope Vol. III

I was very excited to get William Bennett's book "America: The Last Best Hope Volume III". I am a big fan of Mr. Bennett, and actually purchased Volume I of this series when it first came out several years ago. The aim of the three volumes of "America: The Last Best Hope" is to educate the reader of the history of America in as truthful and nonbiased fashion as possible. I found that this volume was especially fascinating. This volume focuses on events that occurred in the United States from the election of 1988 through the present. It details the slow rise of radical Islam and terrorism, from the World Trade Center bombing through the 9/11 tragedy. This volume of Mr. Bennett's series covers such a significant period of time in the United States' history, from the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal to our "Shock and Awe" attack under President Bush, this book gives a great account of our recent history, and does so without any political undertones, which I think is fantastic. Mr. Bennett doesn't try to put a spin on the history for political purposes, he simply tells the factual story of our history, which is a history every single person in America should know. I really enjoyed this book, and had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend it to every American.

Close Enough To Hear God Breathe

I had never read anything by Greg Paul, so wasn't sure what to expect in his book, "Close Enough to Hear God Breathe". I was pleasantly surprised at this book! Greg Paul does a wonderful job of relaying bible stories, as well as his own personal experiences wit and realism. Paul tells stories of his own intimacy with God, which make the reader yearn for that same intimate experience with our Creator. One of my favorite stories Paul tells in this book is of the hard time he went through when his father passed away. I thought it was a true testament to his intimate relationship with God that he was able to find a sort of sweet contentment even in the tragic loss of his father.

"Close Enough to Hear God Breathe" tells stories of hard times as well as good times, and how God has stayed faithful and intimate with his children through both. I think that it's important to remember that even when things are hard, it doesn't mean that God has forsaken us. Building that intimate foundation with the Creator is an essential part of Christian living, and I think that Greg Paul does a wonderful job of illustrating that concept with his book. It's a great read, and I wouldn't hesitate to get any other books from Greg Paul. His writing style draws you in, and you don't want to put the book down until you get through the whole thing. Loved it!

Life Application Study Bible Devotional

I have to admit that I was very excited to be receiving a copy of the Life Application Study Bible Devotional. I own a copy of the Life Application Study Bible, and have always found it to be an easy, concise resource in understanding Biblical passages. The Life Application Study Bible Devotional completely lived up the the high expectations I had.

The format of the devotional is split up into 52 "weeks" of reading. Within each week, there are six daily devotionals - one for each weekday, as well as one devotional for the weekend. Each week covers one main topic, such as Jesus' birth, Jesus' return, and Jesus' heals. I really liked how each day of the week tied into the main theme, and it made the devotionals really tie together.

Each devotional consists of a passage from the Bible, in an easy interpretation. Each daily devotional also discusses the passage and then offers up some deeper questions to make the scripture more personal, and help me to understand how these particular scriptures are relevant, and how they affect my walk with Christ. The daily devotionals are relatively short, usually between one and two pages long, which makes it very easy to fit into my schedule, as it requires only about five minutes to read. This was a great way to start or end my day.

My personal opinion of this devotional was that it is a great daily resource for those of us who desire a closer, more intimate picture of Jesus. It also really offers up thought provoking questions that helped me to understand the bigger picture, and how each particular "story" somehow could be tied of my life. I really loved everything about this devotional, from the format to the easy to read Bible passages, to the length of the devotionals. This would make a great gift for a loved one, or a great tool for personal spiritual growth. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to know Jesus better.

As Silver Refined

Have you ever felt like the world was against you? That the people you hold closest in your life are disappointing you? Or that you are disappointing yourself? Worse yet, disappointing God? Through a series of revealing chapters in "As Silver Refined", Kay Arthur exposes the devil's use of our disappointments to dig a foothold in our lives. This book goes on to discuss ways to recognize these attacks and correct our own thinking when it comes to disappointing situations.

This book really opened my eyes, and made me think differently about some of the difficult situations that I have faced in my own life, and the way I reacted to them. Kay Arthur really breaks down disappointment and showed me how the devil uses my disappointment to gain entry into my life. The solid truths that Kay shares with us are well formulated and backed by scriptural truths.

This book also has a study guide in the back of the book, which makes it a great tool for a student or for a book group studying together. I would recommend copying the study guide pages so that it is easier to follow the guide while reading the book. There are so many wonderful and revealing truths in Kay Arthur's "As Silver Refined", and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been through or is going through a difficult or disappointing time in their own life.

The Grace of God

Andy Stanley's "The Grace of God" is a book devoted solely to the topic of grace. There are a variety of interpretations of grace, such as acceptance, rebirth, redemption, and sustainence. This book has 13 chapters, and they are relatively lengthy, so for someone who has limited time to read daily, it might be a challenge to get through. Stanley uses biblical references to tackle the various angles of grace throughout the book in a very interesting and relevant way. There are many quotes straight from the Bible, as well as descriptive stories from the Bible to illustrate these various interpretations of grace.

I enjoyed this book, and thought it was very well written, thoughtful, and based on biblical fact. I would recommend this book. My only problem was the length of the chapters made it hard to actually get through the chapters. Other than that, great composition and topic.

Gabby, God's Little Angel

I have a three year old daughter, so when I saw "Gabby, God's Little Angel" available on BookSneeze.com, I had to request a copy. When the mail came today, and I told my daughter that the big manilla package was for her, she ripped it open and was so excited to have a new book to read. Needless to say, we read it together right away (she wouldn't have it any other way!). I thought that book was a great introduction to guardian angels for a small child, and it opens up the dialogue of God and angels. The pictures are vivid and wonderfully done. The only thing that I didn't like was that some of the words were a little unfamiliar for a small child. Other than that, I think it was a great book - not too long, but not too short, and it told a very cute story about a little girl who needed God's protection, and the angel, Gabby, who is sent to keep her safe. I asked my daughter how she liked the story when we finished, and she said "Great!"

100 Day Prayer

"Your 100 Day Prayer" by John Snyder is the ideal devotional for those who are on the go. I am a busy stay at home mom, and with a three year old constantly needing my attention I don't get to sit down and read at length like I would like. "Your 100 Day Prayer" consists of 100 days of devotionals. These messages are concise, easy to read, and relay a strong message of faith and waiting on God. Each devotional is short - only about one page, which makes it easy to fit into a busy schedule. Each devotional is followed by a short prayer that compounds on the message of the devotional. I also really liked that after the prayer there is a space labeled "Today's Progress", for you to keep a journal of how God is acting in your life, or what you are waiting for God to show you. It is a neat idea to keep a journal with these devotionals so that over time you can look back and see how God has answered you.

I think that this devotional is perfect. The daily devotionals are short and easy to fit into the day. The prayers are meaningful and concise. And the space to journal is a great idea. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have that daily connection but is short on time.

Dinner With A Perfect Stranger

"Dinner With A Perfect Stranger" is an absolutely fascinating read. Nick is a busy man, and his world starts spinning even faster when he receives an invitation to dinner at a local restaurant - from Jesus of Nazareth. The storyline itself is interesting, but as dinner begins, Nick and Jesus talk about the creation of the universe, religion itself, and Nick's own life. The two discuss the difference in religious beliefs between different religions, and Jesus helps Nick to understand the flaws and inconsistencies in other religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism. This book completely drew me in, and I literally couldn't put it down. It's a shorter book - only 100 pages. The story was compelling, and I completely fell in love with it. David Gregory did a great job of crafting a book that makes the case for God, even to those who aren't believers. This book is a great read for those who believe, or for those who don't - I believe that you will get something out of this book regardless of which of those categories you fit into. Amazing and thought provoking book no matter where you are in your spiritual walk.

Fresh-Brewed Life

I recently received "Fresh-Brewed Life" by Nicole Johnson. I thought that the book itself conveyed strong, personal messages for daily life. The book is broken up into ten chapters meant to help reinvigorate your spiritual life, and stir your soul. The chapters are a little lengthy, and since I have a three year old, it was hard to find time to sit down and read an entire chapter, but the topics that Nicole Johnson touches on are so relevant to the daily life of a Christian. Some of the chapters discuss friendships, anger, relationships, and beauty, which are all relevant and inspiring. Each chapter has a journal "assignment" to go with the topic discussed in the chapter, which really helps to guide your thoughts and focus on the message of the chapter and making it relevant in your own life. I thought this book was a great resource for refocusing my spiritual energy, and it really is a cup of coffee for your soul. Would recommend this book to any Christian woman, or woman who is feeling spiritually worn out.

Stumbling Into Grace

Stumbling Into Grace by Lisa Harper is a different kind of book. Lisa Harper has crafted an entertaining and enlightening Christian read. The book itself reads like a story, but has the Biblical connection of a devotional. "Stumbling Into Grace" was a very enjoyable read, at times funny, and at times a little bit sad, but through that whole range of emotions, the grace of God shines through. I thought that Harper did a great job of writing a Christian book that was so highly entertaining, and intertwining so much of a biblical connection to her own life. This really provokes thought for me, and really makes me ponder God's interactions in my own life. The book flows well from chapter to chapter, and at the end of each chapter there is a prayer, personal reflection questions, and a journal entry prompt. This would be a great book for a small group, book club or mom's club to read together. I also think that this would make a great gift for a mom, sister, wife, or grandmother. It's a great story and devotional, and I would recommend it!

Why God Won't Go Away

"Why God Won't Go Away" by Alister McGrath was my most recent read, and I found it to be a very interesting book. This book recounts the rise of the "new" atheism movement and some of its key players. The book can basically be broken up into three sections: past, present, and future. There are discussions of the four men who spearheaded the new atheism movement, and brief histories of their contributions. These short biographies of Richard Dawkins, Sam harris, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens help to understand the key principles of atheism. I was truly fascinated and a little bit disappointed at how these atheists can make definitive claims about religion that are so far off, such as religion causes violence, or religion is irrational.

While the book itself was interesting, and I believe that it is good to know and understand the arguments of those who believe differently from what I do, I also found that the atheism movement is founded on false doctrines and generalizations about faith. There were definitely moments where I wanted to argue with Mr. Dawkins or Mr. Dennett about these generalizations.

Overall, a good book with a concise explanation of this atheism movement and explanation of the founding principles.

Enemies Of The Heart

Enemies of the Heart is almost like a handbook to an honest self-assessment. From the moment you start this book, you will read things that will make you think, "Yeah, that does sound a little like me". I think that Andy Stanley did a great job of narrowing down the four poisons to the heart: guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy. And honestly, who doesn't suffer from at least one of those afflictions?

Stanley provides an honest and genuine explanation and antedote for all four of those afflictions in his book. I think that if you even thing for one second that you might feel guilty or angry, you should sit down now and start turning the pages. Stanley uses a biblical approach to these secular problems, and I found his book to be supremely useful in giving my own heart an honest assessment.
I think this book is ideal for nearly anyone who wants to life a happier life, free of guilt, anger, greed, or jealousy. Stanley's wisdom and biblical vantage point make a great combination. His tone isn't demeaning, but rather empathetic and understanding. Loved it! Great job, Andy!

God's Love Letters To You

God's Love Letters To You

"God's Love Letters To You" is a 40 day devotional designed to personalize your walk with Christ though a series of intimate conversations penned in this book. Each devotional focuses on a different chapter of the Bible, and each is written as if it were a short letter directly from God, encouraging, empowering, strengthening, and intensitying your personal relationship with God. The chapters are relatively short, so it is easy to pick this up in the morning with your coffee, or in the evening before bed. Each chapter contains a topic thought, that is the main focus of the devotional, followed by a bible verse to support that topic thought. Then, a short letter from God follows, elaborating on the verse. After the letter, there is also a short reflection with points and questions to help you understand exactly how this verse and letter can be applied to your life and personal walk with God. Then, the chapter closes in a short prayer. I think that this book does a great job of personalizing the relationship that we have with God, and really defining the relationship between man and God as one of a father and child. The verses and letters are relevant and encouraging. The prayers are thoughtful and honest. I truly enjoyed reading this devotional, and I think it would benefit everyone who is interested in making their relationship with God a more personal one.

The Quotable Rogue

The Quotable Rogue

As a conservative, I was very interested in reading "The Quotable Rogue: The Ideals of Sarah Palin In Her Own Words" by Matt Lewis. In an age where you can only believe half of what you see in the media and mainstream news channels, I was excited to read this book and hear Sarah Palin's positions and ideals in her own words. This book gives quotes directly from Mrs. Palin on a variety of topics, from abortion to drilling in Alaska. The book is split up into categories, with several quotes on each category that make Sarah's stance clear. I enjoyed reading this book (it is a very easy read), and learning more about a rising star in the Republican party.

After reading this book, I really believe that the media took so many of the things that Sarah Palin said during the 2008 elections and twisted them simply to make her look stupid and underqualified for the vice presidency. The statements found in this book show that Sarah Palin is truly an intelligent, clever, and highly qualified breath of fresh air in the stagnant world of political scheming.

I loved this book, and it will definitely be my go-to source the next time I need a real Palin quote.

MacArthur

MacArthur

When I received "MacArthur", I was a little bit intimidated. I enjoy history, but an by no means a war expert or master historian, so I was a little bit concerned that this book would be hard to follow, with lots of military jargon and strategy. I was surprised and relieved when I started reading this book! "MacArthur" is a practical biography of Douglas MacArthur that is easy to read, and very intriguing. This book doesn't really read like a biography - I felt it was more of a novel, and I really enjoyed following along the storyline of Douglas MacArthur's life. This book starts off detailing the history of the MacArthur family. This is the only part of the book that got slightly confusing, but that is only because there were three Arthur MacArthurs - so it was a little confusing trying to keep track of the three generations all bearing the same name. This book follows a young Douglas into West Point and into his military career, and his successes that eclipsed those of the previous two generations of famous MacArthurs. I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest interest in history or Douglas MacArthur.

The Fight Of Our Lives

The Fight Of Our Lives

I have to admit, I was very excited to read "The Fight Of Our Lives" by William J Bennett and Seth Leibsohn. I have been a big fan of Mr. Bennett for many years, and used to listen to him on a local conservative talk radio program. This particular book is truly fascinating, and I would recommend it to anyone who has concerns about the future of American democracy as we know it due to the decisions being made about how to deal with radical Islamists. As I expected, this book is written in very up front, logical, no nonsense tone that I find it very easy to respect. "The Fight Of Our Lives" focuses on the particular kind of threat that we face in the war on radical Islam. This book gives an easy to understand narrative on key characters and incidents that I found to be refreshing amid the whirlwind that is politically correct main stream media reports. This book essentially calls for an end to the doublespeak and demands attention be paid to the reality of this war, and the damaging effects that it could have on our country if nothing is done. This book is honest, and I enjoyed every page of it. This book is relatively short (only around 150 pages), but it was interesting, and I had a hard time putting it down. I felt that it was relevant, realistic, and a factual account of the situation that the United States is currently facing in dealing with a war on radical Islamic factions. This book is easy to read, with no overly complicated political correctness, and I would highly recommend it.

Love At Last Sight

Love At Last Sight

"Love At Last Sight" by Kerry & Chris Shook is a 30 day devotional dedicated to making the most of important relationships in our lives. The title alone summarizes the mentality of this book - making sure that every interaction with those we love is as fulfilling as possible. The devotionals are slightly longer than other devotionals, which could make it difficult to read if you are short on time. I would estimate around fifteen minutes per day would suffice for reading the text of the devotional. Each devotional targets a particular mistake that we make in interacting with those around us, such as "Being All There No Matter What" (Day 6) and "Intentionally Giving Encouragement" (Day 15). The insight that Kerry and Chris offer is so profound in its effects on relationships, either for the better or worse. At the end of every devotional is a "Love At Last Sight Challenge", that offers up a few journal entry type of questions for you to answer. I think this book could be a great tool to be used in deepening my relationships with those who are most important in my life. It truly does show me how, even unintentionally, I am not getting the most out of those relationships, and offers genuine, honest advice on how to remedy some of those problems. A great book, that I would highly recommend.

A Conversation With God for Women

A Conversation With God for Women

"A Conversation with God for Women" is an extraordinary book! Marcia Ford's book addresses so many questions that we, as Christian women, have in such an insightful way, completely backed with biblical reference and examples. The format of the book is genius - each chapter starts off with a question that I'm sure many Christian women would ask God if we ever had the chance, such as "Can we ever be free of guilt?" The question is then followed by two answers - one from God, and one from Jesus. The chapters are relatively short, and could easily be read as a devotional, only requiring five minutes or so each day. The format of this book and the way it is set up to resemble a conversation made me feel as if I was really making the connection with God while contemplating the issues this book addresses. It really is a great book with a lot of Christian related thought-provoking issues within. I would highly recommend this book. It would make a great Mothers Day gift for the mom/grandma/wife/daughter in your life. Absolutely loved it!

Same Life, New Story

Same Life, New Story

"Same Life, New Story" by Jan Silvious is an interesting book that profiles biblical women in their most important moments. Ruth, Rahab, and Rachel are just a few of the woman Jan Silvious profiles in this book. The stories of these brave women are inspirational, and Jan Silvious does a great job of tying in the faith of the women and God's grace and plans for them. The chapters are lengthy, however. As a mother, I rarely get time to sit down and read a book cover to cover, so personally, I like shorter, more concise chapters that take only 10 minutes or less to read.

The chapters themselves are great as far as relating the chosen woman and her struggles to the everyday struggles of most women, and there is a lot of references to Scripture, which I liked. Instead of just telling you the facts, Jan gives you the tools to find them out for yourself, which I enjoy. I felt like the chapters were a little bit choppy, though. Each chapter starts out with a brief introduction to the woman of that chapter, and then Jan Silvious cuts to personal experiences or experiences of others that relate to this woman's struggle. The personal reflections are great, but they are then followed by the rest of the story of the woman profiled. It seemed a little bit discombobulated to me, which was annoying. I would rather read the entire story about the woman profiled and then read personal experiences, or vice versa, but to me, it just seemed like it wasn't placed correctly.

This book is a great tool for women today seeking biblical role models. The women that Jan Silvious discusses in this book are courageous, intelligent, faithful, committed women of God, and I think that overall, it was a great read.

I would give this book a 3/5.

Recommended for any woman who wants to strengthen her walk with God and is looking for a biblical role model.

Love & War Devotional For Couples

Love & War Devotional For Couples

I recently received "Love & War Devotional for Couples" by John and Stasi Ederedge through my bloggingforbooks.com membership. I have to admit, I read it much faster than one devotional at a time. It seemed as though the words on the page were being recorded straight to my heart, as I read page after page. I really had a hard time putting it down.

"Love & War Devotional for Couples" offers a variety of advice and insight on the personal relationship between a man and woman. Since the book is written by both John and Stasi Eldredge, it offers a unique perspective that both men and women can relate to. This devotional offers practical advice backed with biblical perspective. Each day's devotional begins with one short scripture, then John and Stasi's devotional follows. The devotional is followed by a prayer for the day, as well as another short scripture. The devotionals are short, and can be easily read in only a few minutes, which helps it fit into anyone's busy day. I found this devotional to be loaded with insight for my own marriage. This devotional offers the perspective that marriage is and was meant to be a constant work in progress, and offers up wisdom and biblical insight into not only maintaining marriage, but thriving as a couple. I thought this devotional was a great addition to my daily routine, and would highly recommend it to any couple, whether they are just starting out, or have been married for 30 years. I believe it offers something for every couple.

My Rating: 5 Stars/ 5 Stars
Appropriate for any couple, from newlyweds to couples with 30 years of marriage under their belt. There is biblical and practical truths in this devotional that apply to everyone
